More bonfire coverage the Yorkshire Evening Post

The Yorkshire Evening Post is continuing to respond to its readers
concerns about the axing of the Middleton bonfire. Last night's paper
carried this story about Reverend Stephen Day's concerns.

It also had a quote from Chief Inspector Mick Wharton, of City &
Holbeck Police, who responded to the article in last Thursday's Evening
Post in which a Leeds City Council spokesman cited "serious
public order issues" over the last three years – including the
overturning of a police van – as a major reason for the cancellation as
"the safety of both the public and staff is at stake".

Chief Inspector Mick Wharton said: "No
incidents have been reported to police in relation to this event for
several years and we would have no concern over the safety of such an
event. There have been no incidents in which a police vehicle was
damaged."

People are angry about the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats scrapping the bonfire

I've rarely seen so many local people angry about one issue. Earlier
this year the grass cutting fiasco made a lot of people angry, but
scrapping the Middleton Park bonfire has aroused people even more.

Yesterday lunchtime I went with Councillor Geoff Driver to talk to
people out in the clubs in Middleton and Belle Isle. We found
overwhelming support for our petition to get the bonfire reinstated. In
less than an hour we collected almost 400 signatures to add to the
hundreds that have already been collected by the Friends of Middleton
Park, local churches and local schools.

The visitors and comments on this website have shot up. There have
already been 10 people leave comments as well as the three people who
have allowed me to publish their letters to the Yorkshire Evening Post.

And the campaign against the Conservative / Liberal Democrat cuts has
only just started. Remember you can read about some of the other cuts at www.stopthecuts.co.uk where
you can also help Conservative Councillor John Proctor to light the
Middleton Park bonfire and play a game featuring his mate Councillor
Mark Harris, Leader of the Liberal Democrats, collecting perks on his
trip to China.

Which West Wing character are you?

The idealistic speechwriter is well-liked by just about everyone.
He's known for his excellent writing, sense of humor, and tendency to
be clutzy.  Although being younger than the rest of the staff,
he's often treated as so, much to his dismay.

Managing your fear of public speaking

One of the fellow professional communicator blogs that I read is the effervescent Lee Hopkins, so a tip of the cork rimmed hat, for this link to the Presentation Coach blog which has a great post on managing your fear of speaking in public. The secret is that for the very best public speakers "the fear never goes away".

The blog has some useful tips for all us politicians.
