Morrisons selling stores to Sainsburys

BBC NEWS | Business | Morrisons selling off nine stores

When I read that this and that it was mainly town centre stores I thought great they'll be selling the store in Rothwell. No such luck, we're still stuck with Morrisons which in my humble opinion easily qualifies as the worst of the big four supermarkets.

It's interesting to note that my rant about Morrisons in March is one of the most visited entries on this blog with lots of comments, most agreeing with my criticism of Morrisons.

Belle Isle road bridge - pier replacement

I've just received notification that there are to be some major roadworks on Belle Isle Road. Starting on 1 November the Highways Agency is going to be rebuilding the central pier that supports the M621 where it crosses over Belle Isle Road.

It means that Belle Isle Road will be reduced to a single lane in both directions but it will be kept open at all times. The off-slip road from the M621 will be closed with traffic being diverted to Junction 7 and then the A61, Church Street and Balm Road. It doesn't say anything about the on-slip road, so I assume that will remain open.

Long-term it means that the existing Belle Isle Road dual carriageway will be reduced to a wide single lane (including a cycle lane).

The highways department is looking for comments. Anyone?

Bodmin Crescent subway to be closed

At long last it looks like the Bodmin Crescent subway on the Westwood estate is going to be closed. This is something that councillors and the local residents' association have been calling for since almost as long as I can remember.

I've now got copies of plans showing the proposed works. Sadly paper only so I can't easily post them up on the blog.

Distraction burglary warning

I've just had a report of a distraction burglary in Middleton. A 78-year old resident was visited by a man wearing a jacket with a logo on of one of the contractors that is carrying out improvement work on behalf of Leeds South Homes.

The man claimed he wanted to inspect the plastering in the house. The tenant left the man alone for a period and when he returned he found the man had gone along with some money.

All tenants should be aware that all Leeds South Homes staff and contractors carry and show ID when visiting houses. Don't let people in if they don't have ID.
