It's politics that matter not councillor.info

Gareth Davies has an excellent post about councillor.info. He's not a fan. Neither am I. The entire project does damages the cause of e-democracy.

It is a ludicrous idea that councillor's should have websites funded by
their local authority. Your authority doesn't fund your election
leaflets or community newsletters so why should it pay for your
website? The problem if you're a councillor that signs up to the
councillor.info project is that it only solves part of your problem. As
it's paid for by your authority you can't use it for normal political
purposes.

In my book that makes it pretty pointless. I'm a LABOUR councillor
because I believe, damn it I KNOW, that Labour Party policies are the
only ones that can possibly deliver a better deal for my constituents.
And that's why I'm a councillor. To play my small part in creating a
better community, a better society, a better country, a better world.

Councillor.info is one of those public sector ideas that was several
years too late in arriving. Councillors shouldn't need any more
assistance to create a website than they should to create a newsletter.
Both require a similar level of IT skills.

If I can't use this blog/website to say how damaging the Leeds Tory/Lib Dem led council's policies and
what Labour would do better then there really is much point.

I'm not sure it is such a ludicrous idea that local authorities should create an on-line presence which helps to acknowledge the role we play in the governance of our communities; and that they are forced to give us control of those sites.

After all you go to most council websites and try and find out anything about us beyond the barest minimum. Anything that takes having an on-line presence beyond us few early adopters can't be a bad start.

That said there are limits that having an publicly paid for site that I don't much like, which is why it was only one of several aproaches taken by the local e-democracy national project (including a blogging platform which didn't have the same political restrictions).

We wait to see whether as time goes on which approach will be the most attractive to us and the public.

I think councillor.info is OK in principal, but one of the big problems is that the key thing driving council participation is not the desire to up-skill councillors but the desire to achieve a rather crude Implementing Electronic Government target.
The fact that hardly anyone updates their pages then means we are paying a hefty rental only because we wouldn’t meet the IEG target without it.
I think some of the limitations are also quite well illustrated by the fact that this discussion is developing in different places across the blogsphere in a way which simply wouldn’t happen inside councillor.info itself !

Having talked to the people who produced councillor.info it seems clear to me that what is on there is a movable feast - so it could have a blog if there was a demand for that.

That's not to say that there aren't limitations to all the solutions that have been tried by the local e-democracy national project. However, I think we are in the early days of this.

I also think we need to remember the reluctance that many of our colleagues have in using the technology - regrettable thought that is. I'm definitely regarded as eccentric for having taken to blogging and for pursuing the line that this is, and will continue to be, an important strand in our conversation with our constituents.

If a traditional website, with an easy content management system and the promise that you don't have to spend more than half an hour a month to update it encourages more of us to improve our electronic visibility I think its a step forward.

It seems that all parties are either ignoring or scared to face the problem if illegal immigration
in the United Kingdom. While most of undocumented immigrants are hiding and living in misery, J Reid and
L. Burn are pretending to be in control of the situation. This inertia is will only benefit scrupulous employers

So far we have been listening only to right wing parties and think tanks. That's the reason why I decided to
launch the survey at http://www.skillipedia.com to hear opinions from normal people. Once we get enough coverage
from the press we will be able to relay the result of the survey to the Home Office

You opinion is much appreciated
